Hey all,

I am thinking of teaching in South American and have generally heard good things about Ecuador. Can anyone shed any light on what countries are best for ESL teachers? I know this is pretty generic but though I would ask anyway!

Ecuador is up and down...mostly down I'm sorry to say. When positions open there, usually in late February, the pay tends to be on the low side, around 4-6 us dollars per hour. Livable, but you can do much better in Central America, Mexico, or in Chile.

The Souther Hemisphere runs an academic year opposite to the north, starting in March and running to December. Therefore, you need a position locked up by late-January or early-February. Still, there are positions that hire year-round, usually in the adult and business EFL areas.

Hi Guy,

Thanks for the great advice. To say I was unprepared is an understatement! I didn't even know the academic year had a different schedule than here in North America. Also thanks for the pointers on the other countries...I'll definitely give them a look see. Good Stuff!!!

Thanks,

Abell

It has been a while since your messages, and you may be overseas already, but I thought I would reply, in case. We are also looking for jobs now and there are places that start the school year in August and even in October. We are planning on leaving the beginning of August!
