Which locations are accepting Asian teachers (Australian native speakers)? I've heard that China and other Asian regions prefer caucasian/white teachers and people who look foreign.
However, I would actually prefer to work in Europe or even South America anyway, is it the same case in these areas? How do Europeans feel about Asian looking teachers, even though my first & native language is English.
Which country would be most accepting and where should I look. Also, is there much work in the South Pacific region? Say, New Caledonia etc...

Hi - when I worked in the UK my DOS was Asian and here in Riga I know of at least one Asian EFL teacher. Only two anecdotal examples, I know, but I doubt ethnic origin makes any difference in Europe. Native speaking with an EU passport is what most of them are really hung-up on.

Yes, schools in Asia may prefer "caucasian/white" teachers, but in fact they are
a) not always able to get them and
b) beginning to realise that native speakers may be of any ethnicity [/i]

I agree with the above. Here in Japan it can make it harder but if you're a decent teacher, you would still be able to find a job. Some places, however, do want the "foreign" look.

Similar question asked on Asian TESOL teachers and I posted something there.

If you would like to try Asia, please do so, as in some places perhaps parents beginning to realize that they might have been tricked into believing that white or caucasian can "teach" but in fact the reality might be the exact opposite!

Sylvie, I think it doesn't make much difference in Europe, the problem is mostly in Asia. Too many people are scared that language schools try to pass off local teachers as being native speakers, and therefore they will pick up a poor accent or poor grammar. This is changing slowly, but it still exists.

I've known schools ask Asian English teachers not to speak the local language, so as to convince students they really are native speakers.

I agree with the posters above who suggest trying Asia - if you are interested in working there.

In Taiwan many schools find it hard to get a good teacher (many applicants are not professional). Therefore, if you are well qualified and enthusiastic, you should stand a fairly good chance.

I agree with everyone else that you should try teaching in Asia. They are more tourist friendly there and in my observations they trust, listen and learn more from native English speakers. Best of luck to you!
