Hi, there.

I've been working for them for about a year now and the basic rate is $9 for 45 minute sessions + 5 minutes of feedback reports.

There is a bonus on the ratings that client give you which brings it to an average of $11 for a 50-55 time spend.

Last month, I worked a schedule of 42 hours/week and got around 1200Euro. Damn dollar conversion. Dollar is rising slightly. No tax or other cuts to the overall wage. You do have to pay PayPal for transferring money to your bank account 3.9%.

Some weeks ago I applied for an online teaching job, sending a covering letter and full particulars in a CV, as requested. Eventually I received an email from a company that does surveys, asking pages of questions. I was careful in my response, and would not have filled out any details such as banking etc, but was rather concerned at getting this questionnaire. I have heard nothing since.

Usually when you apply for a job you know the name of the company (so you can look it up), and get a Job Description or something. All I know is, this company is purportedly based in Dublin, and it advertised through this site, so I thought it was bona fide.

Anyone else applied, or can give me further information? It's all beginning to feel a bit suspect!!

The name of the Company is Talkhour and it is based in Dublin.

I spoke to the author (Barry Halford) of the advertisement today and he told me that it was a new project for him and therefore, will take time to set up, hence the delay in responding to applicants.

It doesn't look as though he will be ready to start anytime soon but expects his website, under construction, to be ready sometime within the next month.

Thanks UJ. Your investigations have been most welcome. My reaction to the results of your investigation however is to suggest that what this man is doing is actually classed as misrepresentation. He's pretending to be offering jobs, when what he's really doing is a marketing survey in order to decide whether or not it's worth setting up his business - wasting all our time in the process, as well as storing private information about individuals who mistakenly think they have submitted a genuine job application. I suggest this is fraudulent, and shouldn't be allowed on the website, especially as he didn't even give the name of his business before asking for all our information.

Anyway, I'm pleased you have been able to steer me in the right direction - away!

Teaching online is definitely becoming more common. There are many different language schools out there which are doing quite well and look after their tutors. I teach online and really enjoy it, as do my students.

A friend told me that as an incentive to get people teaching the Uk government will cancel your student debt if you go into teaching and teach for about two years. However, I can't find anything online which supports this. Does anyone know if it's true?

Actually, I find this question to be rather demeaning and I think it is indicative of the wrong attitude often encountered in EFL today.

Would you even dare to ask is dentistry a hobby or a profession? Is classroom teaching a hobby or a profession? It's quite insulting!

Those who consider this career a hobby are making a bad name for those of us who value what we do as a career, a profession. These are the people who 'feed' the unscrupulous 'schools' who give our profession a bad name.

I have studied hard for the certifications and requirements necessary to be a competent teacher and I continue my education whenever I can by attending courses and classes, often outside my home country, incurring considerable expense.

To those who consider EFL a hobby, they need to start collecting stamps.
