My wife and I have just finished our contract teaching in Mexico. Mexico was not our first choice but we went there because we could drive to Mexico from Canada. At that time that was an important requirement.

Our first choice would otherwise have been Japan. We are now considering our options to teach in Japan and would like to hear from other ESL teachers about their experiences, both good and bad.

Where are the best places to teach? Are there some schools that should be avoided? Are there some schools that can be recommended? What are some of the pitfalls to watch out for?

After teaching in Mexico we are older, wiser and more convinced than ever that Japan should be our next destination. We do however want to approach this with both an open mind and open eyes.

Any advice would be appreciated. We are currently on our way back to Canada, but can be reached through this forum or directly thereafter.

I'm a Canadian ( from PEI ) and I've been in Japan for 13 years. Some of those years I worked as a teacher and I recommend you come and see for yourself what a great place Japan can be to live and work. You and your wife both have teaching experience which is almost a prerequisite these days. The economy is in a bit of a slump and after NOVA language school went out of business there were a lot of teachers locally looking for work. Word on the street is that there is still a big demand for teaching.

I would recommend not coming to Tokyo though. Your chances of finding work here are higher but the quality of life will suffer. Try a Fukuoka city or Kumamoto sized city instead.

I used to work at a YMCA and they had in-house classes for all ages and also would send teachers to high schools and universities for work. I recommend them off the top of my head.

Hey

I am currently teaching at a middle school in Korea, and want to go teach at either a middle or high school in Japan early next year.

Besides the Jet Program, what are the best recruitment companies to apply with? I would prefer to work in a rural setting.

I came to Japan with no job, just a working holiday visa, a visitor visa would have worked just the same since I changed my visa after a few weeks anyways.

I just looked for a job after I got here.

It seems there are a ton of employers willing to hire teachers if they are already there, but not from abroad.
