My department makes us buy a so-called textbook package for students; first, the whole package cost about $90; and the extra material like the CD is worthless. And wouldn't you figure, it was written by a senior faculty member at the college. What a coincidence. It's a big waste of money, and I get books from DOVER for my students that cost a dollar brand new. The bookstore and the department and especially the textbook guy doesn't like it, but my students and I see a rip off when we see one. If you live in the U.S. you can take a look at the catalog of these advanced readers at http://www.inthetext.com/?page_id=65 and if you live in England or the U.K. you can order them through http://www.inthetext.com/?page_id=160.
If you're interested in why textbooks are so outlandishly expensive in general, you can check out CALPirg's website, an organization that did an analysis of how teachers and students get ripped off. |
