My name is Sarah and I'm from Ontario, Canada. My first language is English, but I am fluent in Portuguese. I'm hoping to find a job in Portugal for September start. I'm expecting to have my Portuguese citizenship and EU passport in order in August. I have limited experience in tutoring English, but I do have an Honours degree in English.
I am wondering what my chances are for obtaining a year contract in Portugal in September. |

Hello Sarah
I don't have any experience with teaching English in Portugal but the British Council in Portugal would be a good place to start. See below for their web address:
The following may also be of use to you
1. The British Council in Portugal produces lists of local English language teaching institutes. These are available on request. There are a total of 11 British Council teaching centres in Portugal. These include:
Central Portugal: Coimbra
Lisbon area: Almada, Alverca, Cascais, Lisbon Central, Miraflores, Parede, Queluz
Porto area: Foz do Douro, Maia, Porto Central
2. Classes of learners as young as 7 years old are common in many of Portugal's language schools.
3. It is not uncommon for schools to pay a '13th month' bonus to teachers who have worked over 12 months.
4. Job ads for ESL/EFL teachers regularly appear in the Education supplements of The Times and The Guardian, as well as in the EL Gazette. You will be able to get these newspapers in Canada
5. Portugal's Yellow Pages (Paginas Amarelas) contain contact details for most private English language schools ('Escolas de ingles' or 'Escolas de lingues').
6. The Classifieds sections of the Journal de Noticias and Diario de Noticias newspapers often have job ads for ESL/EFL teachers.
7. English Language newspapers:
The News
The Portugal Post
The Algarve Resident

Dear Sarah,
I am a teacher of English in Portugal. Unfortunately, it is not very easy to get a full-time job in Portugal. As the current labor laws make it almost impossible to fire an employee, most employers rather avoid to hire teachers on full-time basis. If you plan to come here, be prepared to work on "Recebos Verdes."
For more information, you can visit the following link. Hope it will be useful.

Good luck and all the best!
